01What is LinkedIn jail?

“LinkedIn jail” is the nickname people use for a restriction, most often a pause on sending invitations. LinkedIn itself doesn’t use the term. It calls each one a restriction and explains the kind on its own Help pages a550555.

02What does it mean when your LinkedIn account is restricted?

It means LinkedIn has limited what you can do, from a pause on invitations lasting about a week to blocking the account entirely. The notice on your screen tells you which kind you have.

03Why was my LinkedIn account restricted?

For invitations, LinkedIn names three causes: many invitations sent in a short time, many left ignored, pending or marked as spam, and a suspected automation tool a551012.

Whole-account restrictions can also follow a false identity, content that breaks the rules, or a hacked login a1340522.

04Why does LinkedIn think I’m using automation when I’m not?

LinkedIn doesn’t explain its checks, so fast, repetitive clicking can look automated even when a person is doing it. Slow down and follow only the steps on the notice.

LinkedIn’s page on automated activity says a contact form is “available only to some LinkedIn members”. Use it if you see it, and don’t expect it if you don’t.

05How long does a LinkedIn restriction last?

An invitation restriction “typically lasts one week”, and LinkedIn says it can’t shorten it. An automated-activity restriction lifts at the time on the notice once the tool is off a1340567.

06What should you do in the first 24 hours?

Read the notice, stop all sending, turn off anything connected to the account, and follow only the steps LinkedIn shows you.

1. Read the exact wording of the notice. It tells you which kind of restriction this is.

2. Stop sending invitations and messages until you understand why.

3. Turn off any browser extension or sending tool connected to the account.

4. Follow only the steps LinkedIn shows on screen. Ignore third-party advice that offers to get the account back for you.

5. Verify your identity if LinkedIn asks for it.

6. Wait out the timeline for that restriction type before trying again.

07How do you get a restricted LinkedIn account back?

Follow the on-screen steps: verify your identity if asked, remove any tool that automates activity, and wait for the time on the notice. LinkedIn re-enables accounts restricted for automation on its own once that time passes a1340567 a1340522.

08Why is LinkedIn asking you to verify your ID?

LinkedIn asks for ID when it needs to confirm the account belongs to a real person. You upload a government-issued ID through its partner Persona, and LinkedIn says it generally deletes the data within 14 days of submission a1342692.

Canada, the EU and the UK also offer an affidavit option instead of an ID. School and library IDs aren’t accepted anywhere.

09Can you appeal a LinkedIn restriction?

Sometimes. For automated activity, LinkedIn offers a contact form to some members a1340567. For content decisions, you log in and follow the on-screen prompts to ask LinkedIn to look again a1340522.

LinkedIn’s support contact form is where either route ends up if the on-screen steps don’t resolve it.

10Can you keep using automation after a restriction?

Turn it off first. LinkedIn’s own steps for an automated-activity restriction start with disabling the software a1340567, and restarting the same setup risks another restriction.

11Can you open a new LinkedIn account if yours is restricted?

Don’t. The User Agreement bars creating “a false identity on LinkedIn” or “a Member profile for anyone other than yourself” (section 8.2). A second account made to get around a restriction puts both at risk.

12What happens to your connections and messages while restricted?

An invitation restriction pauses new invitations, not your existing connections. You can still message people you’re already connected to.
