After someone accepts your invitation, send one short message that picks up the reason from your note and adds something useful. If they don’t answer, send one follow-up that adds something new, then stop.

Sample thread. Note: “Saw your careers page lists a first AE role. Who carries the pipeline until they start?” (87 characters). They accept.

First message: “Thanks for connecting. Most founders split the pipeline across the team for a quarter, then hand it over once the hire ramps. Is that the plan here, or something else?”

One follow-up, five days later, after they post about the new hire starting: “Saw your post: the new AE started this week. How’s the handover going so far?”

What should you send after someone accepts your connection request?

Send a short message that picks up the reason from your note and adds one useful thing: an observation, a direct answer to your own question, or a resource that isn’t yours to sell. Don’t pitch, and don’t ask for a meeting yet.

  1. Reread your own note. Whatever reason got them to accept is still the reason to keep talking about.

  2. Add one new thing. A related fact, a direct answer to the question you asked, or something useful that has nothing to do with your product.

  3. Ask one small thing, or nothing at all. A message that only restates the note with no new content reads as a template.

  4. Send it within a few days of acceptance, while the reason is still fresh in their mind.

If you sent no note at all, because your free monthly quota ran out, this first message after acceptance carries the entire reason on its own. Make sure it names something specific to them, not a general opener.

How long should you wait before following up?

Wait a few working days after they accept, so the message doesn’t feel automatic. We haven’t found a study that pins an exact number of days, so pick a rule and hold to it rather than guessing case by case.

How long do people take to reply on LinkedIn?

Most replies come within days, not weeks, but LinkedIn publishes no sales benchmark for how long to wait. LinkedIn does count an InMail as answered if the reply lands within 30 days, which is a recruiter-facing rule, but still a sensible outside window for judging whether any message is likely to get an answer.

If nothing has come back after a few weeks, treat that as your answer rather than waiting indefinitely.

What should a follow-up message say?

One line that refers back to why you wrote, one line that adds something new, and one easy question, if you ask anything at all. Skip “just bumping this to the top of your inbox”: it tells them nothing they don’t already know.

Before: “Hi Neha, just bumping this to the top of your inbox in case you missed it.” (74 characters, and it asks nothing.)

After: “Neha, saw the post about your new SOC 2 report. Five months is a long audit. Was the slow part gathering evidence, or fixing what the auditors found?” (149 characters, built on something new.)

How do you follow up when someone doesn’t reply?

Send one follow-up that gives them a new reason to answer, not a reminder that your first message exists. Then stop. Silence after a genuinely useful follow-up is an answer on its own, and a third message rarely changes it.

How many follow-up messages should you send?

One. Our own default is one follow-up per person, written by the same person who wrote the note, because more messages add pressure, not new reasons to reply.

This is our practice, not a LinkedIn rule, and it isn’t a feature we list separately by plan. Treat it as how we work rather than a promise tied to a specific tier.

Should you send a follow-up at all?

Yes, once. Many people accept an invitation and mean to reply later, then forget. A single, useful follow-up catches them without turning the connection into something that feels like a mistake on their part.

Can you automate follow-ups and keep them personal?

A tool can send a message on a schedule, but LinkedIn’s rules treat automated messaging the same as any other automated activity, and a follow-up only works if it responds to something that actually happened. LinkedIn’s User Agreement bars using “bots or other unauthorized automated methods” to send messages, and its help pages warn that accounts using such tools risk restriction.

We use a cloud-based sending tool with daily limits to send messages from a client’s own profile. Your operator, a GTM engineer on our team, writes every follow-up by hand, because a genuinely new reason can’t come from a template. See what LinkedIn says about automation tools for the fuller rules.

How do you know if your follow-ups are working?

Count replies to the follow-up separately from replies to your first message. If follow-ups rarely get answered, the fix is usually the first note or who you picked, not the number of follow-ups you send.

Track this weekly rather than message by message, so one quiet week doesn’t read as a trend. Our guide on what to count every Friday covers the full weekly routine.

Quick answers

Should you send voice notes or videos as a follow-up?

Only after someone has already replied. An unsolicited voice note or video asks more of a stranger’s time than text does, before they’ve agreed to spend any of it on you.

Is Q4 or the holiday season bad timing for a follow-up?

Replies slow down around holidays in most places. Don’t read a quiet week around a holiday as a no; wait until normal weeks resume before judging the thread dead.

Can you follow up an InMail that got no reply?

Only after they accept and reply once. LinkedIn’s rule is direct: “You cannot send a follow-up InMail unless the recipient accepts and responds to your first message.” See InMail vs a connection request for the full comparison.

Rather see these rules applied to your own profile? Paste your LinkedIn profile link. A person, not a bot, sends you a profile score and 10 warm prospects worth talking to, with the plan we’d recommend, within 24 hours, and it’s free.

Where do I find my link?

On the LinkedIn app: tap your photo, then View profile, then the three dots, then Share via, then Copy link. On a computer: open your profile and copy the address bar.

Free. A GTM engineer checks your profile and emails your audit within 24 hours: a profile score, 10 warm prospects and the plan we’d start you on.

Where should we send your audit?

Profile: linkedin.com/in/

Your audit arrives here. Nothing else, unless you ask.

How big is your network?

LinkedIn shows others only “500+”, so we can’t see this. It helps us pick your plan.
